Northeast Resident and Community Organizer Sydney Jordan Announces Run for 60A Primary with Labor Backing

Minneapolis, Minn. (December 4th) -- Sydney Jordan, an experienced environmental and labor organizer from Northeast Park, has announced she will run for State Representative in the 60A Special DFL Primary election. Jordan brings deep community ties and an organizer's spirit for making progressive change to the race.

“I’m very excited to kick off this campaign. Our district is unique and diverse. We need a representative who knows how to bring people together, build power, and fight for a progressive vision at the State Legislature. I am the candidate who can get the job done,” Jordan said.

“I have organized and won important victories—for equitable school funding, workers’ rights, and the environment. As State Representative, I will listen with compassion and fight with tenacity to make sure all voices in our community are represented at the Minnesota legislature.”

Jordan is the State Director for the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters where she has worked with legislators and oversees the statewide organizing campaign fighting sulfide-ore copper mining in the watershed of the Boundary Waters. Prior to joining Save the Boundary Waters, Jordan worked as an organizer for causes and elected officials, including the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers, Education Minnesota, the mayoral campaign of Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and MPIRG. Jordan enters the Special Election race with a high-profile endorsement from Minneapolis Fire Local 82.

“Sydney Jordan is a longtime friend of Minneapolis Firefighters. She has worked side-by-side with our members and our union sisters and brothers in several roles. Sydney has dedicated her life to the causes of working people. We know Sydney and are endorsing her early because she has walked the walk. Local 82 is eager to work with her to keep Minneapolis residents safe.” said Mark Lakosky, President MFD Local 82

Jordan grew up in a union household on the shores of the Mississippi near East Moline, Illinois. Her public employee parents instilled in her a deep commitment to community service. After high school, she attended the University of Minnesota.

Governor Tim Walz has called a special election for early next year. The 60A Special DFL Primary will be held on Tuesday, January 21. The Special General Election will be on February 4th. General election candidate filing is open until Tuesday, December 10.

The 60A seat was recently vacated by the passing of longtime Representative Diane Loeffler. Loeffler was recognized for her compassion and in-depth understanding of health and human services issues. Loeffler served the district since 2005.

About Loeffler, Jordan said, “Diane especially cared for the most vulnerable Minnesotans. She was an incredible legislator and advocate for all of us. She made our lives better and I will miss her.”
